Sound of Space is an ongoing radio show conceived by Paulo Raposo for the Lisbon based Radio Zero. The program is focused in presenting and documenting site-specific works, compositions and installations which process or aural experience departs from a personal reflection on the idea of space.

In each program, it is presented a particular sound artist or project that explores ways to disrupt and reconfigure space in unexpected and ideosyncratic ways, sometimes along with an interview setting up the context and the conceptual / theoretical background for their own activity.

#28 The sound of space - Brandon Labelle & James Webb
Radio Flirt utilizes a series of mini-fm radio transmitters located throughout a building, inviting visitors to follow traces of incomplete messages, hidden whispers or trembling static that appear as an ambiguous and secret narrative. Radio Flirt is an intimate radio experience that lets the user hear the secret narrative of the building.

#27 The sound of space - Ozu
The excellent label and/Oar hommage to the japanese film-maker Yasujiro Ozu. The focus is upon Ozu's use of "pillow shots" - short poetic pauses that appear between the acting segments of his films.

Mike Hallenbeckis a sound designer, composer, and audio artist based in Minneapolis USA. Water as a subject, exploring his array of manifestations provides here a wide spectrum of sound and musicality to investigate.

#25 The sound of space - Christina_Kubisch
Christina Kubisch belongs to the first generation of sound artists. She has artistically developed techniques of magnetic induction to realize her installations, redefining acoustic space and the dimension of time. Special magnetic headphones enable the wearer to hear otherwise undetectable frequencies emitted from all kinds of electrical sytems such as those found in traffic lights, anti-theft security devices, surveillance cameras, mobile phones, computers and neon advertising.

Japanese sond artistsToshiya Tsunoda has introduced innovative approaches in the art of "field recording". Rather than being documental or naturalistic, his pieces appear as unique music compositions concerned with the relation between space and cognition, rendering the vibration of objects audible, revealing the hidden beauty in each sonic detail.

#22 The sound of space - Maksim Shenteliev
Interview with Maksim Shenteliev, architect and sound artist living in Riga, Latvia. His interest in subtle and microscopic nature field-recordings reveals highly complex hidden structures and exposes in its ideosyncratic approach a merge with the subject.

#21 The sound of space - Richard Chartier
Levels (Inverted) was commissioned as part of the city wide Found Sound exhibit. This six-channel site specific sound installation was exhibited October 15-November 19, 2005 at the 1515 Arts Building within the three story concrete stairwell. The sounds utilized are based on site recordings of the space and towering central flourescent lighting fixture itself. Thick white audio wires draped down from the ceiling and small speakers adhered to the glass panelled staircase.

#20 The sound of space - Gilles Aubry
Berlin Backyards is a sound piece based on field recordings of several backyards made in Berlin during the winter 2006. In the urban context, backyards are interesting in that they are transitory spaces between private and public territories. They are the place of various types of neighbouring interactions - from friendly greetings to perverse voyeurism – where a mutual process of visual and aural control is at work on the pretext of the community's security, a phenomenon illustrated in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie Rear Window.Berlin Backyards aims at attracting the attention of the listener on the sonic qualities of the space itself and on micro-variations in the peripheral sound environment.

O processo de trabalho de Steve Roden utiliza diversas formas de notação (palavras, partituras, mapas, etc.) que são traduzidas através de sistemas inventados em partituras abertas e fexíveis. Nos seus trabalhos sonoros, fontes sonoras singulares como objectos, espaços arquitectonicos, gravações, são abstraidos e transformados em paisagens imaginárias. Neste programa, escutamos a obra "Radio" e excertos de um "soundwalk".

#18 The sound of space - Toshiya Tsunoda
A abordagem sonora de Toshiya Tsunoda representa uma reconfiguração radical do conceito de "field recordings".Nas suas peças de uma meticulosidade cientifica e arquivista, emergem delicadas composições que questionam a relação entre espaço e cognição, tornando audível a vibração secreta dos objectos. Extractos do seu arquivo têm incluido o movimento do ar dentro de uma garrafa de vidro ou investigado as superficies sólidas nos campos e portos de pesca japoneses. Um trabalho, a todos os níveis, vibrante.

#17 The sound of space - Alvin Curran
Primeiro da série de programas dedicados a Alvin Curran. Em destaque, a obra de 1975: Songs and Views of the Magnetic Garden. Nesta luxuriante peça multi-media, já clássica, o compositor utiliza e combina de modo único e orgâncio, o som de sinos, gamelão e ruídos da natureza, com a sua própria voz e sintetizador.

#16 The sound of space - ECO E NARCISO
O evento "Eco e Narciso" realizou-se em Torino, Itália, comissariado por Daniela Cascella e Rebecca De Marchi, envolvendo a contribuição de 8 artistas sonoros consagrados que desenvolveram uma série de instalações sonoras site-specific na rede de museus de cidade. Neste programa, escuta-se as peças de John Duncan e Valério Triccoli, Jakob Kirkegaard e ainda Stephan Mathieu. Estes intervenientes criaram delicadas atmosferas que amplificam a poética e plástica do lugar, e que podemos definir como “audio-landscapes”.

Seth vive presentemente em Portland e como artista sonoro trabalha em múltiplos contextos, desde a composição e instalação à dança e performance colectiva. É editor da revista Fo Arm, uma revista pluridisciplinar.

#14 The sound of space - Francisco lopez 'La Selva'
La Selva, de Francisco lopez, constitui uma impressionante imersão no ambiente sonoro da floresta tropical da Costa Rica. A densa teia sonora, criada por uma multiplicidade de sons de chuva, quedas de àgua, insectos, batráquios, pássaros, mamíferos e até plantas, no decurso de um dia da época das chuvas, constroi um tour de force de escuta profunda. Os sons gravados por Francisco Lopez não foram manipulados ou processados.

Segunda parte, em colaboração com a radioINCORRECT.org, da série de programas em volta do Das Kleine Field Recordings Festival, que decorreu entre 13 e 22 de Fevereiro em vários locais da cidade de Berlim. Organizado por Rinus van Alebeek, o evento reuniu uma série considerável de artistas sonoros. Neste programa, temos excertos e entrevistas com rinus , jeff gburek, lasse-marc riek, harold schellinx e kate donovan.

Esta sessão em colaboração com a radioINCORRECT.org inícia a apresentação de uma série de programas em volta do das kleine field recordings festival que decorreu entre 13 e 22 de Fevereiro em vários locais da cidade de Berlim. Organizado por Rinus van Alebeek, o evento reuniu uma série considerável de artistas sonoros que utilizam, de distintas maneiras, o microfone como instrumento principal. E começamos pelo fim, apresentando a entrevista de Tobias ao australiano Rob Curgenven. Cuidado com os insectos!

#10 The sound of space - Afflux
O primeiro programa dedicado ao explorador sonoro Eric La Casa inicia-se com o seu projecto Afflux: um trio que realiza projectos site-specific e em tempo real. neste programa, escutaremos o resultado da intervenção de Eric La Casa, Jean-Luc Guionnet & Eric Cordier - uma performance / instalação / transmissão rádio de 6 horas - no centro cultural TNT em Bordéus, França. No interior e exterior do centro, situado numa antiga fábrica de sapatos, o trio colocou centenas de metros de cabos e utilizou diferentes tipos de microfone para gravar toda a actividade sonora em redor, sendo esta processada e misturada em tempo real numa mesa de 32 canais. Simultaneamente,a mistura ao vivo foi projectada e espacializada no auditório, encontrando-se o trio no piso superior enquanto a audiência escutava e deambulava pelo piso inferior.

Entrevista com Derek Holzer na segunda de duas edições dedicadas ao projecto colaborativo online "Sound Transit" que permite agendar uma viagem sonora através de gravações sonoras realizadas em diferentes partes do mundo. Este projecto da autoria de Derek Holzer, Sara Kostler e Marc Boon é dedicado às gravações de campo e à fonografia em geral, e encontra-se aberto a contribuições ao abrigo da licença Creative Commons.

#4 The sound of space - Janek Shaefer
Em escuta, a obra "Cold Storage" de Janek Schaefer. Esta resultou de um convite para realizar uma obra site-specific em Ostiense, na àrea de Roma. Janek escolheu e colectou sons no interior de um vasto edíficio de tijolo previamente utilizado como cãmara frigorífica. "Cold Storage" foi premeiada em diversos festivais internacionais.

#2 The sound of space - Chris Watson
Chris Watson is a sound recordist who specialises in documenting the sounds of animals and their habitats around the world. He was a member of both Cabaret Voltaire and The Hafler Trio in the seventies and eighties. He has worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds as well extensively in film, television and radio. From the middle of the nineties he began to release CDs based on environmental recordings. These albums [Stepping into the Dark, Outside the Circle of Fire and most recently Weather Report] have become touchstones in the world of field recording.
